Four-Day Long Weekend!

It’s a four-day long weekend in Cambodia this week!

It starts from today, which is “King Norodom Sihamoni’s Coronation Day”, a public holiday, and then stretches from tomorrow until Sunday, which is “Bon Om Touk” (a.k.a. the Cambodian Water and Moon Festival). Depending on companies, some places will have a replacement holiday on the following Monday, due to public holiday on a Sunday. With this, it makes a five-day long weekend in total! How we wish we have the same long holiday here in Japan as well, given that October is a holiday-deficit month this year.

Sad to say but “Bon Om Touk” has been cancelled this year due to the outbreak of Covid-19, as announced by the Cambodian government in August. “Bon Om Touk” is a festival meant to celebrate the reverse flow of the Tonle Sap River, and to mark the end of the rainy season in Cambodia. Depending on the lunar calendar, it usually falls in late October or early November, and it is one of Cambodia’s grandest festivals. During “Bon Om Touk”, many people will visit Phnom Penh to catch the main event – boat racing competition at the Tonle Sap River, as well as to enjoy the river float parade, outdoor street market, and fireworks at night.

We sure hope we will be able to see again, the same old bustle of the festival next year.

ASEAN City of Culture 2021-2022 ー Siem Reap

On 22 September 2020, it was announced that Siem Reap city, Cambodia will be named as ASEAN City of Culture for 2021-2022, during the 9th AMCA (ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Culture and Arts) meeting via video conference. This is certainly a great news as we all know that Siem Reap is a city rich in history and culture, due to it being the former capital of the Khmer Empire and is home to Angkor, an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For your info, Siem Reap city is the sixth ASEAN city being selected, since the ASEAN City of Culture initiative first started in 2010. In a bid to promote and strengthen ASEAN identity, an ASEAN city will be designated to showcase its cultural life and development for a period of two years. Past cities selected for ASEAN City of Culture include:

  • Cebu, Philippines (2010-2011)
  • Singapore (2012-2013)
  • Hue, Vietnam (2014-2015)
  • Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam (2016-2017)
  • Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2018-2020)

We certainly do look forward and hope this appointment of ASEAN City of Culture can help revive the tourism business in Siem Reap next year, and once the pandemic subsides.

Paris Peace Agreement Day

On this day 29 years ago, the Paris Peace Agreement was first signed, and it marked the end of the Civil War in Cambodia, which had troubled the country for decades.

The peace treaty, held in Paris, France (and hence the name), was signed and witnessed by 19 countries, including Cambodia, France, Japan, China, Singapore and so on. The peace agreement eventually led to the deployment of U.N. peacekeepers in Cambodia the following year, and it paved a way for the recovery and redevelopment of Cambodia, bringing about peace and stability since then.

Originally, the Paris Peace Agreement Day was supposed to be a national holiday, however it was removed by the Cambodian government from this year onwards.

Cambodia’s Scarecrow

Beware, Ting Mong is watching you. Photo credit: Scott Sharick.

In Japan, scarecrows are placed in farm plantations or rice fields to scare off birds or other animals from destroying crops. However, in Cambodia, usage of scarecrows has a different meaning to it. Instead of to chase away birds or animals, scarecrows are used to ward off evil spirits and ghosts, or as a protection against disasters and diseases. Furthermore, they are placed, not in plantations or rice fields, but in the front of houses.

In Cambodia, scarecrows are known as “Ting Mong”, and they are usually found in rural village areas. “Ting Mong” can be found in all kinds of designs; from one who carries a rifle in military uniform, to one that wears a helmet and dressed up in vibrant colours. And even “Ting Mong” with human-like faces can be seen. Unlike normal scarecrows in Japan, “Ting Mong” have a pair of legs attached to them, allowing them to stand upright in front of houses. People who did not know about “Ting Mong” may find them creepy.

So if you do happen to have a chance to walk in the rural areas of Cambodia at night, do not be alarmed by the existence of “Ting Mong”. Also, we advise against touching the “Ting Mong”, for you do not know what might be attaching to it・・・
