カンボジアの豆知識 (4): 5回も改名しています！Fun Facts About Cambodia (4): Five Times Renaming!

カンボジアは、国旗のデザインと同様に、国名が政権交代に応じて変わっています。１９５３年以降の変更回数はなんと５回！現在の正式名称は『Kingdom of Cambodia』ですが、皆さんには通称名『Cambodia』の方が馴染みがあるのではないでしょうか。

さらにカンボジアにまつわる豆知識をもう一つ。秋野菜の定番カボチャの語源がカンボジアであることをご存知ですか？室町時代、ポルトガル人がカンボジアからカボチャを日本に持ち込んだことが語源となっているようです。

Like the national flag, the official name of Cambodia changes with each new government administration. Since 1953, Cambodia has changed its name for five times! While 「Kingdom of Cambodia」 is the current official name, most people will be more familiar with using 「Cambodia」 to address.

Since we are on the topic of Cambodia’s name, do you know that the Japanese word for pumpkin, “Kabocha” has its origin related to Cambodia’s name? During the Muromachi period in the 16th century, the Portuguese brought pumpkins from Cambodia (known as “Kambojia” in Japanese) to Japan, and subsequently the locals referred to pumpkins as “Kabocha” in Japanese.
